  • How do you work with multiple companies?

During the job search it is not uncommon to work with more than one company to find you the right opportunity. In fact, for the purposes of keeping options open and negotiating, it is encouraged. You are not committed to them in any way by simply speaking with them on the phone.

However, know that the companies do not get paid unless you accept a contract with them.
With that said, you must be mindful of their time still and adhere to certain etiquette when working with multiple recruiting companies during the job search.

Once you accept a job and sign a contract though, you are only employed by the company contracting you, but in 10 weeks when you are ready to start the job search again, you can begin the search with multiple companies once again.

Rules with working with multiple companies:

  • Don’t just work with any company… Go with a company that is recommended to you by someone who has been in the business a while. If you are traveling alone, stick to 2 companies/ recruiters, initially and choose 3 companies if you are traveling as a team because it gets complicated when working with more than one company; Click here to learn about the Etiquette of working with multiple recruiting companies.
  • A cautionary tale (from experience): Do not submit your info to too many different companies, otherwise you will be non-stop contacted by 50 companies via phone, email, and text. It might sound appealing initially as a new grad, since you have no money and no job, but I can assure you that the luster of it fades quickly. Especially if you are not sure what kind of work, values, or standards the recruiter/company upholds.
  • Do NOT pin companies against each other to negotiate a higher salary or take one company’s job to another company in hopes to get better pay. This is poor form and can get you black listed. Do not share job openings between companies. It is a very competitive market out there; use the same consideration that you would request. Simply, ask each company what the BEST is that they can do for you based on the fact that you have other offers.
