Your resume is your first impression.
So it’s important to make a statement. It may be what scores you an interview over the other candidates. Here are my tips to creating a resume that makes DORs drool.
1. Clean Formatting
Create a clean and organized resume, that not only has relevant content, but is also easy to read, and stands apart from the other candidates. An organized, well-formatted resume is important as it is your first impression when submitted to a job opportunity. Use headings, spacing, and formatting like bold and italics to create hierarchy and an aesthetic appeal that is easy to read. Line-up dates maintaining the same date format throughout.
2. Relevant Content
Make sure all of the content is relevant: Remove any unrelated work experience, community involvement. And if it doesn’t fit on the first page, remove any professional development or in- services, and when you get the phone interview, you can discuss this experience in detail, if it is relevant to the job.
3. Be Specific
When describing your affiliations, be specific about what types of patient populations and diagnosis you say, and tools, techniques, and skill- sets you learned that will make you stand out from others. What modalities did you use? What manual techniques did you learn? For example, instead of saying attended “lectures” on a weekly basis, describe the information that you learned at lectures or the types of patient population that you worked with. Ex) Experience with acute, post-op total knee and hip replacements and ACL repairs in outpatient setting.
4. One Page
If possible, fit it all on one page with professional references being on the second page. You could increase the margins on the paper or decrease the font size (but not below 10), if you need more space.
5. Professional References
On the second page, include at least 3 professional or clinical references. Include Name, title, credentials, facility, contact phone, and email.
